Ballistic resistance
Ballistic resistance
People have always guarded themselves against the effects of all kinds of weapons. Knights rode on horseback during the Middle Ages wearing iron armor, which guarded them against the swords, axes and arrows of the enemy. They were very heavy though and the knights were awkward in them. At the time when firearms were being perfected this armor became ineffective and was discarded, so that a soldier was not limited in his movements by unnecessary armor. Today, in the era of carbon, titanium and steel, people have returned to guarding themselves against the effects of modern weapons.
The most popular is apparently the bulletproof vest. The vest is tested on a base material, which simulates the rigidness of the human body. Tests are performed directly on a finished product or on the material designated for the production of ballistic resistant mediums. The firearm is attached to a sniper’s lafette that allows the specification of an exact point of contact. Aiming is aided by a laser system.
The speed of the firing action and other values are measured at the actual firing of the weapon. At present, ballistic resistant materials are not only those which protect against shots fired from a gun, but also those which guard against attacks with piercing weapons, striking instruments and splinters. These, besides vests, include helmets, glasses, shields, pyrotechnical suits and other specialized equipment affording general protection against the effects of bullets, splinters, shocking and stabbing weapons. Certain military units and police strike force units mainly use this kind of protection during dangerous police actions and demonstrations.
Even employees of security agencies, postal services and banks use this kind of protection during the transfer of money. Post offices and even banks safeguard themselves against hold-ups by using bulletproof partitions and bullet-resistant glass. A similar system is used in military aircraft and helicopters, and also in vehicles used in humanitarian missions.
A report is always compiled on the test with a description of the sample and test results. When all required norms of the sample are realized, the product is issued with a certificate that certifies that all required parameters have been met.
And in conclusion, one more thing: the Czech Proof House for Firearms and Ammunition tests these products according to Czech and international standards.
